Researchers develop a graphene oxide aerogel foam to improve all solid state lithium batteries

Researchers from China's Jiangsu University and Changzhou University have developed a non-ceramic solid-state electrolyte based on a graphene oxide (GO) aerogel framework filled with polyethylene oxide.

Li-ion batteries currently perform a key role in electric cars, but contain combustible liquid electrolytic materials which may pose major safety issues. The solid-state electrolyte (SSE) can replace the standard organic liquid electrolyte and is predicted to address safety issues such as leaking, heat runaway, and even explosions during operation.

Zentek announces the development of graphene-wrapped silicon anodes

Zentek has announced the patent-pending development of a graphene-wrapped silicon anode material, developed along with Prof. Michael Pope, an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and in collaboration Dr. Marianna Uceda and Dr. Zimin She.

Zentek’s CEO, Greg Fenton, commented: We are very pleased to support Dr. Pope and his group at the University of Waterloo. Their innovation has the potential to improve the current lithium-ion battery by upgrading graphite to this graphene-wrapped silicon anode. Not only were the researchers able to demonstrate good performance with laboratory-scale half-cells, the performance was also validated with commercial lithium iron phosphate cathodes suggesting they could be a drop-in solution for enhancing already available battery technologies. We look forward to continuing our support of their research and development to potentially bring this technology to market. The company has begun discussions with a potential industry partner.

On 2D Fab and its graphene-based Li-Ion battery anode technology

Enhancing the performance of batteries is one of the main challenges as we aim to increase EV range, reduce our dependence on oil and increase mobility. Graphene has been considered a leading material that could improve the capacity, charge time, safety and other aspects of different battery technologies. The following article is an excerpt from our Graphene Batteries Market Report, that details the graphene battery developments being carried out at Sweden-based 2D Fab.

Graphene powder, 2D FabGraphene powder, 2D Fab

2D Fab was established in 2013 as a spin-off from Mid Sweden University in Sweden. The company produces graphene flakes using graphite from the Swedish Woxna Graphite (owned by the Canadian company Flinders Resources). 2D Fab received venture funding from Miun Venture in 2015.

In June 2020, Sweden-based 2D fab closed a new share issue of approximately €700,000. The company stated that this capital will primarily be used for developing the organization and for commercializing the Company's graphene products. The share issue was directed to a limited number of investors, having received the offer either via the company's executive management or via G&W Fondkommission. Through this transaction 2D fab received eleven new owners, among them Malmö based Polynom Investment.
