Empa is looking for a PhD candidate with a strong experimental background in Materials Science, Surface Science or Physical Chemistry to take up a challenging PhD position in the area of Graphene Nanoribbon Science and Technology.
Within this PhD project, to be conducted in partnership with the Department of Physics of the University of Zurich and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Bern, the electronic properties of atomically precise graphene nanoribbon (GNR) structures will be investigated using surface scientific characterization tools such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) & spectroscopy (STS) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). A focus will be set on the investigation of GNRs with zigzag edge topologies as well as GNR heterostructures. To further tune the electronic properties of GNRs, various post-growth functionalization procedures will be applied, such as charge doping via alkali metals. In order to establish clear structure-property relationships, the STM/STS measurements shall be complemented by ultimate resolution non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) characterization.
Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry or Materials Science. A solid background in Surface Science and previous experience using STM or other ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis equipment would be significant benefits. Very good communication skills in English are required, German language skills are beneficial.
The position is available upon agreement with a planned duration of three years.
Empa offers a challenging position in a materials research institution with outstanding infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The PhD student will be integrated in the PhD Program of either the University of Zurich or the University of Bern, depending on his previous background (physics or chemistry, respectively).
