A position exists for a Research Associate in the Cambridge Graphene Centre to work on printed hetero-structures based on graphene and related layered materials as part of EPSRC and EU funded research.
The aim is to develop a new class of flexible (opto)electronic and energy storage devices embedding the optical and electronic functionalities of graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems. The post holder will undertake the optimization of inks, dispersions and composites based on graphene and exfoliated layered materials for a wide range of printing and coating techniques, as well as their implementation in (opto)electronic and energy storage devices.
The role holder will be responsible for testing the materials in transparent and conductive composites for photovoltaics, smart windows, touch screens, and flexible electronics devices in general. The major objectives will be to: 1. Identify novel atomic crystals and their heterostructures to create multifunctional devices and sensors. 2. Develop stable, jettable inks based on such materials suitable for printing on a broad range off substrates including flexible, paper and textiles. 3. Develop composite materials by combining two or more inks of different materials to fine-tune the properties of the resulting composites. 4. Design printable heterostructures based on such inks. 5. Develop strategies for ultra-high spatial resolution printing with inks, from picolitre to femtolitre to atolitre (one flake per drop). 6. Create system solutions for battery-free remote sensing, based on printed heterostructures.
This is an ambitious frontier research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across engineering, physical, chemical and soft matter sciences. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Photonics, Material Science or Electrical Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with proven expertise in preparation and optimisation of inks based on graphene and layered materials, as well as ink-jet printing and roll to roll manufacturing.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance, with a salary of £28,982-£37,768
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
