Graphene-enhanced lead-acid batteries launched in China

Three companies in China recently launched graphene-enhanced lead-acid batteries, and they claim the graphene materials boost the performance of the batteries. While it is hard to verify the exact content and composition of these batteries, it seems as if graphene is finally starting to enter the battery market.

First up is Tianneng battery, which offers its TNEH Series Deep Cycle Black Gold Battery. The company says that the graphene expands the cycle life of the batteries and improves the performance at low temperatures. The TNEH series offers a 20% longer cycle life compared to the company's non-graphene batteries. The same battery also offers a 5% increase in capacity at low temperatures.

Are graphene batteries finally getting closer to commercialization?

Batteries have always been a highly sought-after application for graphene materials, bearing promises of expanded capacity, ultra-fast charging, improved safety of use and more.

Graphene battery advantages imageEarly testing in labs and research institutes were very promising, but the move from lab to market proved more challenging than people expected. Even today, in 2021, graphene batteries aren't on the market yet, in any major way.

We do see, however, some niche adoption - for example, the use of graphene to enable novel battery casings, or extending the battery's temperature range (see Huawei's 2016 graphene battery announcement for example). But actual graphene-enhanced battery anodes or other components haven't been realized yet.

New rGO-based material could improve energy storage devices and supercapacitors

Researchers from Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), along with collaborators from the University of Lille in France, have synthesized a new material, based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), for energy storage devices and supercapacitors.

Researchers design rGO-based electrode materials for high-performance symmetric supercapacitor image

The rGO modification technique that involves the use of organic molecules, derivatives of hypervalent iodine, reportedly enabled acquiring a material that is capable of storing 1.7 times more electrical energy.
