Graphene shows excellent resistance to stress

Researchers from the University of Toronto have shown that graphene is highly resistant to fatigue and is able to withstand more than a billion cycles of high stress before it breaks.

The intrinsic strength of graphene has been measured at more than 100 gigapascals, among the highest values recorded for any material. But materials don't always fail because the load exceeds their maximum strength. Stresses that are small but repetitive can weaken materials by causing microscopic dislocations and fractures that slowly accumulate over time, a process known as fatigue.

Researchers develop a new technique for making graphene oxide and implement it in improved supercapacitors

Researchers at the India-based Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) are developing an economical graphene-based supercapacitor that can present an effective alternative to providing energy to various applications, including state-of-the-art military equipment, mobile devices and modern vehicles.

Graphene has been used in the newly developed ultra-capacitors to replace the expensive activated carbon, and the switch seems to have also reduced the supercapacitors' weight and cost by ten times.

First Graphene updated on VFD work

First Graphene (FGR) has provided an update of the work on the Vortex Fluidic Device (VFD) technology. First Graphene and its subsidiary 2D Fluidics are developing a more benign processing route using the Vortex Fluidic device for oxidized graphene and recently successfully transferred the technology to First Graphene’s laboratories at the Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre in Manchester.

Work has been underway on the Vortex Fluidic device at First Graphene’s Manchester facilities, with the technology undergoing further development and optimization to identify, understand and resolve future upscaling issues.

Zen Graphene Solutions provides updates on its financials and plans

ZEN Graphene Solutions recently shared several updates. The first is that Zen has closed its recent private placement of flow-through common shares of the company and reports that it was oversubscribed. The company raised CAD$1.21 million (around USD$920,300) in respect of the offering, which will be used to finance the 2020 environmental baseline field program and community engagement work on the company's Albany graphite project.

In addition, the Company announced that it is moving forward with graphene production and anticipates that small-scale graphene related production will commence before the end of Q1 2020. The first batch of equipment for the purification small-scale pilot plant was already delivered. In the coming months, ZEN is aiming to setup small-scale graphite purification and graphene-related production facilities including Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) and Graphene Oxide (GO). These products will be available for research and development, application development and for commercial use.

Graphene oxide proposed as significant component of interstellar dust

Peter J Sarre, Professor of Chemistry and Molecular Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham in the UK, has released a fascinating work that infers, based on previously unassigned optical and infrared astronomical observations and comparison with laboratory data on graphene oxide (GO), that GO is a significant component of interstellar dust.

Dust particles play a major role in the formation, evolution and chemistry of interstellar clouds, stars, and planetary systems. Commonly identified forms include amorphous and crystalline carbon-rich particles and silicates. Also present in many astrophysical environments are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), detected through their infrared emission, and which are essentially small flakes of graphene.

University of Manchester and Khalifa University collaboration uses GO to take salts out of water

A partnership between The University of Manchester and Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi has yielded graphene-based membranes aimed at to taking salts out of water.

The most popular method for water desalination currently is a process called reverse osmosis, which requires large quantities of water to be forced through a membrane to remove the salts in the water. This method is particularly useful when there is a high salt content, however more efficient methods are required for bodies of water that have a lower salt content, known as brackish water. The team of researchers has developed new ion-selective membranes incorporating graphene oxide, for use in electromembrane desalination processes such as electrodialysis and membrane capacitive deionization.

ZEN Graphene Solutions signs agreement with Chemisar Laboratories for consulting and new graphene development center

ZEN Graphene Solutions has signed an agreement with Chemisar Laboratories to provide various consulting services which will include the use of 2,300 square feet of office and laboratory space in Guelph, Ontario starting October 1, 2019. This office will become the company’s new graphene research and development center which will include a small-scale graphene processing and production facility. Additional space is available in the building which will allow ZEN to grow as needed.

In the coming months, ZEN is aiming to setup small-scale graphite purification and graphene-related production facilities including Graphene Quantum Dots (GQD’s) and Graphene Oxide (GO). These products will be available for research and development, application development and for commercial use.

Graphene oxide to help regenerate cartilage

Researchers from the University of Manchester have found that incorporating graphene oxide into three-dimensional scaffolds that support regenerating cartilage could offer a new means of delivering vital growth factors.

Damage to cartilage from injury or disease is difficult to remedy because of the material’s low capacity for self-repair. Future treatments hope to harness tissue-engineering approaches, introducing hydrogel scaffolds impregnated with stem cells that can proliferate and differentiate into chondrocytes, to make new cartilage. This strategy requires the appropriate biological cues to drive cell differentiation, but the results of various attempts to achieve sustained delivery of such signals have been disappointing.
