Skeleton Technologies raises €29 Million in Series D extension
Skeleton Technologies recently announced the closing of a further â¬29 Million in its Series D round of funding. With this development, the total funding in Round D now amounts to â¬70.4 Million including the â¬41.3 Million announced in November 2020.
This round follows the company’s â¬51 Milion funding by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Free State of Saxony, announced in March 2021.
Frontier IP provides funding to graphene-based photonics developer CamGraPhIC
Frontier IP Group subscribed to £842,810 of loan notes from portfolio company CamGraPhIC as part of a £1.5 million loan designed to help accelerate growth of CamGraPhIC, spun out of the University of Cambridge to develop graphene-based photonics for high-speed data and telecommunications.
CamGraphIC says it is currently working with partners to fabricate proof-of-concept sample devices.
Public graphene companies reach almost $2 billion in market value
The graphene industry seems to be flourishing, at least when looking at the valuations of public companies. As we reported earlier this year, graphene stocks have risen nicely towards the end of 2020, and the trend continues in 2021 for most companies.
The total market value of graphene companies now reaches $1.8 billion USD for the 13 leading graphene public companies we track. It is important to note that not all this value is directly related to graphene - some of the companies have other activities, mainly graphite mining and supply. But for all these companies, graphene is a major part of the business, and most of the companies are pure-play graphene companies.

Carnarvon and Frontier Impact join forces to produce biodiesel and graphene from biomass
Australia-based oil and gas company Carnarvon Petroleum has created a new joint-venture with Frontier Impact Group to produce renewable materials, including graphene. Carnavron committed $2.6 million AUD into the new JV.
FIG is developing a bio-refinery which will produce materials from biomass and other biogenic feedstocks. The main material produced by the new bio-refinery is biodiesel which is a direct substitute for the petroleum-derived diesel. The high-grade biochar used in the process will be further refined into graphene.
AMD to fund £2 Million of research into sustainable nanomaterial tech at Sussex university
Advanced Material Development (AMD) will fund £2 million of research by the University of Sussex to develop nanomaterial technologies for environmentally sustainable uses. This funding will pay for five researchers to work on developments for the next three years.
Professor Alan Dalton, who leads the university’s Materials Physics Group and is a and co-founder of AMD, said: We’re on the cusp of taking a number of our inventions out of the lab and to market, and this significant new boost from AMD means we can recruit the team we need to make the next step... The company has exciting collaborations with Marks and Spencer, Honeywell and many other global companies lined up. The potential applications for nanomaterial inks are boundless.
New ICE-Batt project sets out to optimize battery technology using graphene and CNTs
CPI and Thomas Swan have teamed up with Johnson Matthey (JM), a company focused on sustainable technologies, to explore how to best optimize battery technology using graphene and CNTs.
The ICE-Batt project receives funding support from the Faraday Battery Challenge, managed by Innovate UK the UK’s innovation agency to enable the investigation of how innovative carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can improve battery performance. In addition, the project will explore how to improve the green credentials of battery processing.
Ora Graphene announces a strategic investment to advance existing graphene endeavors and explore additional application areas
Ora Graphene, producer of free-standing graphene membranes, has announced the closing of its CAD$3 million (around USD$2.46 million) Seed financing round. The deal was led by Ecofuel Fund along with Export Development Canada (EDC), BDC Capital and certain members of New York Angels. Existing investors TandemLaunch, and BoxOne Ventures also participated in the round. In conjunction with the financing, the company was recently awarded a Sustainable Development Technology Canada grant to explore new areas of graphene applications for its technology.
Ora has produced what it refers to as 'the largest sheets of free-standing graphene demonstrating incredible new material properties for multi-purpose commercial utilization'. GrapheneQ membranes have already been shown to significantly improve sound quality and reduce energy consumption for global manufacturers of consumer electronics, with applications being developed for exciting new markets opportunities.
